The City of Torrance welcomes applications for Service Attendant!
Service Attendants work at the City Service Facility lubricating, fueling, cleaning, and assisting in the repair of transit vehicles such as buses, cars, and trucks. The current vacancies are in Transit and General Services.
The Service Attendant oils, fuels, lubricates and checks fluid levels on vehicles and equipment in accordance with manufactures specifications; replaces, repairs and balances tires and tubes; inspects and adjusts air and hydraulic brake systems; and checks, repairs or replaces lights, mirrors, wiper blades, oil, air and fuel filters, and other vehicle parts requiring routine maintenance. This individual also performs routine preventative and maintenance work; assists Mechanics in more complex service and repair of vehicles and equipment; and performs related work as required.
Attendants indicating an interest in the Transit Facility will work on Transit buses and those that indicate an interest in the Fleet Service Facility will work on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
You must be able to work any shift between 4 AM to midnight, 7 days a week including weekends and holidays. You must be available to work overtime as necessary.
Note: This position may require handling of waste matter when cleaning and maintaining vehicles.
Salary: $18.24 - $22.12 Hourly
Education and Experience
Two years of experience in lubrication, tire repair, general vehicle and equipment maintenance or repair. No specific education minimum, however, vocational training in the overall repair of vehicles is desirable.
License and/or Certificates
A valid Class B California driver's license within six weeks of hire date.
In addition to the minimum requirements, an ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- A mechanical background;
- A background working with alternative fuels (i.e. CNG Hybrid vehicles);
- Ability to follow rules and use precaution with tools and equipment;
- Ability to read and understand maintenance and specification manuals; and
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Only those candidates who best meet the City and Department's needs will be invited to participate in the examination process, which will consist of the following components:
Performance Exam: 70% (To be determined)
Oral Exam: 30% (To be determined)
The performance test will measure a candidate's ability to perform typical tasks required of a Service Attendant, such as changing tires and lights, checking batteries, and identifying commonly used tools.
Positions under this classification perform "Safety Sensitive" functions as defined by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and are subject to Federal drug and alcohol testing. Pursuant to the US DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations – 49 CFR Part 40, Federal Regulations do not authorize the use of Schedule 1 drugs, including marijuana, for any reason. As a condition of employment, applicants will be required to pass a pre-employment medical examination, a DOT drug and alcohol test, and a background investigation.
